日本人の英語の弱点2

以前、こちらのコラムで日本人の一番の英語の弱点は

冠詞(a, the)だとお伝えしましたが、

その次ぎに生徒さんの間違いが多いのは、

前置詞です。

これも冠詞同様、基本ルールを覚えて、

何度も繰り返し学習していく他ないのかもしれません。

【前置詞の基本ルール】

ある一定の時間を表わす場合

＊特定の日＝On:

• I will see you on Monday.
• The week begins on Sunday.

＊時の一点＝At:

• My plane leaves at noon.
• The movie starts at 6 p.m.

＊比較的長い時間=In:

• He likes to read in the afternoon.
• The days are long in August.
• The book was published in 1999.
• The flowers will bloom in spring.

期間

since, for, by, from—to, from-until, during,(with)in：

• She has been gone since yesterday. (継続：以来)
• I'm going to Paris for two weeks. (期間の長さ)
• The movie showed from August to October. (起点：　~から~いつまで)
• The decorations were up from spring until fall. (~まで（ずっと）)
• I watch TV during the evening. (特定の期間)
• We must finish the project within a year. (~以内に)

場所

• There is a man in the room. （~の中に）
• I left your keys on the table.　（~の上に）
• She was waiting at the corner.（~で）

場所：上を表わす場合

• He threw the ball over the roof.（全面を覆って）
• Hang that picture above the couch.（より高い位置に）

場所：下を表わす場合

• The rabbit burrowed under the ground.（真下に）
• The valley is below sea-level.（より低い位置に）

これは、ごくごく基本的なルールですが
